How the Upload Time Calculator works

  1. Enter the file size and choose its unit (KB, MB, GB, or TB).
  2. Enter your connection speed and choose its unit (Kbps, Mbps, or Gbps).
  3. Read the estimated time — the calculator converts everything to bits and bytes internally so units don't have to match.

Formula / logic

Time (seconds) = (File size in bytes × 8) ÷ Connection speed in bits per second.

Worked example

A 5 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection: 5,000,000,000 bytes × 8 = 40,000,000,000 bits ÷ 100,000,000 bps = 400 seconds (about 6 minutes 40 seconds).

Frequently asked questions

Is upload speed the same as download speed?

Not usually — most home internet plans have slower upload speeds than download speeds, so check your plan's upload Mbps specifically for an accurate estimate.

Does file compression affect upload time?

Yes — compressing a file before uploading reduces its size and therefore the upload time; this calculator estimates based on the final file size you enter.

Why divide by 8 in the formula?

File sizes are measured in bytes, but connection speeds are measured in bits per second, and there are 8 bits in a byte — the calculator converts between the two automatically.

Does Wi-Fi slow this down compared to a wired connection?

It can — Wi-Fi signal strength, interference, and router capability can all reduce real-world speed below your plan's advertised maximum.

Is the Upload Time Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on this site is free, with no sign-up or download required.
