Formula / logic
Hours worked = (Clock-out time − Clock-in time) − Break minutes, converted to decimal hours for payroll (e.g. 7h 30m = 7.5).
Worked example
Clock in 9:00 AM, clock out 5:30 PM, 30-minute break: total time is 8h 30m minus 30m break = 8 hours worked.
Frequently asked questions
Is this different from the Work Hours Calculator?
They calculate the same thing — total hours from start and end time — just under a different common search name.
Does the Hours Worked Calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes — if clock-out is earlier in the day than clock-in, the calculator assumes the shift ended the next day.
Is the break time paid or unpaid?
The tool assumes any break you enter is unpaid and subtracts it from the total — leave it at 0 if breaks are paid at your workplace.
Does this calculate net pay after tax?
No — it calculates gross hours and gross pay only (hours × rate). Tax withholding depends on your location and filing status.
Is the Hours Worked Calculator free to use?
Yes — every calculator on this site is free, with no sign-up or download required.
